The wound

One man tried to cut death out of the world.

The Blight pours from the Sundering, a wound the realm's brightest son tore in the world to spare it from dying. The dead rise. The land forgets its own name. Malakar calls this mercy, and he keeps everyone he "spares."

You are Dawnsworn: sworn to march to the wound and seal it. Five fallen regions stand between the Last Hearth and the Sundering's core, and each one used to be somewhere worth saving. That is the point of going.

The Emberfields, harvest country under an ash-grey sky
I

The Emberfields

Harvest country, gold to the horizon. The militia held the hedgerows for nine days. On the tenth they rose again, still holding them, for the other side.

Gorehide, the Tainted The region's boss Gorehide, the Tainted The first proof that the Blight makes things bigger, not better.
  • What hunts here: Risen Militiamen
  • Blightfang Hounds
  • Locust Swarms
  • and worse
The Thornwood, an ancient fey forest turned hostile
II

The Thornwood

The old fey forest, kept since the Kindling by the Green Accord. Its Warden drank the Blight himself to spare the deep groves, and it rotted him standing. The wood still keeps his oath: nothing passes.

Oakthorn, the Rotted Warden The region's boss Oakthorn, the Rotted Warden He kept his oath. That is exactly the problem.
  • What hunts here: Corrupted Treants
  • Fey Tricksters
  • Thorn Stalkers
  • and worse
The Sunken Sanctum, a drowned elven temple-city
III

The Sunken Sanctum

An elven temple-city drowned beneath the marsh. Its oracle saw the Sundering coming in every reflection, and by her order's creed said nothing. The choir sings the Lament still, under the water. Listen if you must. Do not answer.

Maris, the Drowned Oracle The region's boss Maris, the Drowned Oracle She saw you coming. She has always seen you coming.
  • What hunts here: Pale Choristers
  • Temple Specters
  • Tidecallers
  • and worse
The Shadowhold, a black fortress on the ridgeline
IV

The Shadowhold

The black fortress that kept the Nightgate for forty generations, until its castellan opened it once, for a friend bearing the court's seal. His garrison serves in death, still at their posts, because Vorrek cannot bring himself to release them.

Vorrek, the Iron Tyrant The region's boss Vorrek, the Iron Tyrant Forty generations of duty, and one door he cannot close.
  • What hunts here: Undead Knights
  • Stone Sentinels
  • Dread Hounds
  • and worse
The Blightheart, the burning core of the Sundering
V

The Blightheart

The Sundering itself, and Malakar's seat within it. The First March of the Dawnsworn fell here, and he keeps them still. He does not rage. He recruits. His welcome is a kindness, which is the most frightening thing in the realm.

Malakar, the Blightlord The Blightlord Malakar The realm's brightest son. He calls what he did mercy.
  • What hunts here: Fallen Seraphs
  • Bone Demons
  • Heralds of Malakar
  • and worse

Past the end

Below the Blightheart, the maps end.

The Sundering was never a pit. It is a throat, and no plumb line, prayer, or Dawnsworn has ever touched its bottom. Fell Malakar and the Breach stands open: take its gift, seal a Trial, and descend until the names run out. Every floor deeper, the corruption grows teeth.

  • Trial of Avarice · riches, at a price in blood
  • Trial of Wrath · a door that opens from both sides
  • Trial of Aegis · iron, paid for in Embers

The Hearth keeps a fire lit for those who try anyway. It has never once gone out.

The road is waiting.

Five regions. Five bosses. Then the dark that has no floor.
